Black Man Being Killed Today (What’s going on?)

While White men on a bus are chanting the word nigger.
A Black man is being killed today.
While a sign announcing White history month swings from a local restaurant.
A Black man is being killed today.
While you’ve been accused of using reverse racism.
A Black man is being killed today.

Was he obeying himself according to some law?
Could he afford the medication to maintain his depression?
Was he filled with rage that seethed just underneath?

While you’re walking down the street with your pants sagging.
A Black man is being killed today.
While you’re being robbed by Keyshon, Antoine, and Dewon.
A Black man is being killed today.
While a Black business doors are being closed.
A Black man is being killed today.

An empty chair and plate at a lovely table setting.
The soulful tears that drip down a mother’s solemn chocolate face.
The frantic scream of ,”No, no, no! Not my brother! I was just with him! ”

While the search for the killers of Tupac and Biggie is all but over.
A Black man is being killed today.
While a sassy baby girl cries out her arrival.
A Black man is being killed today.
While you’re sitting there simply minding your own business.
A Black man is being killed today.

Everyday
The body count seems everything but endless.
A proud, confused, full of potential, pride, and flaws just like you, Black man.

While key parts of the voting rights act are being eviscerated.
A Black man is being killed today.
While politicians are being sold to the highest bidder.
A Black man is being killed today.
While the fiftieth anniversary of Selma is being celebrated.
A Black man is being killed today.

Did he have plans ,dreams, and goals?
Will yet another Black family be left fatherless?
A beautiful Black bride cancels her wedding day.
One less foot fall in the hall of a college campus or corporate office.

A Black man is being killed today.
The American way.
We’re so angry and shocked.
Mouths ripe with excuses and blame.
What they thought was a gun was just a plastic comb.
The struggling gasp of his last breath.

A. Black. Man. Is. Being. Killed. Today.
