*You can bet this tourist got more than he was looking for when the lion he was looking at decided to give him a closer glimpse. Brendan Smith, a tourist from Australia, had landed in South Africa just over a day ago before coming on safari in Johannesburg; when an adult-sized lion jumped in his car through the window and went to town on his legs.

And not only is dude alive to tell the story, he actually has a sense of humor about it.

“No later than 36 hours after touching down in Africa, I find myself in hospital after a lion jumped through the car window and decided to go to town on my legs,” he wrote on Facebook. “Pretty full-on but am alive, with insurance coming to the party and an influx of curious Africans wanting to see ‘the lion man.’”

On top of his humorist view of the incident, he posted pictures of the nasty bites on his Facebook page.
Of course no one ever knows what it is exactly that causes a lion to approach one car and not another, add to that, attack its riders, but Basic safari safety rules warn people to stay in the car, refrain from sticking anything out of the car, and keep your windows rolled up. I guess Smith didn’t read that final rule and look what happened as a result.

There are areas where animals are more accustomed to tourists and are less likely to approach. This writer recalls such a time when I was in South Africa, staying on a lion reserve. I rode in a door-less jeep through the safari grounds with a guide who (we later learned) only carried a tranquilizer gun. Myself and a dozen other, apprehensive journalists, sat snapping pictures and secretly praying that the giant lion who sat about 20 feet away from us would remain calm.

He did, thank goodness!

Meanwhile, Aussie Brendan says he’s feeling good, counting his blessings and making “small but satisfying steps of rehab.” He adds, “When the swelling and bruises have gone down I’ll head back home and be dancing up a storm in no time.”
