Illinois GOP: If single moms can’t find the dad, their babies won’t get birth certificates

Being a single mom in Springfield, Illinois could get a little more difficult if certain GOP lawmakers get their way.

According to the proposed bill HB6064 filed last week by Reps John D. Cavaletto and Keith Wheeler, if a father is not listed on a newborn child’s birth certificate, the birth certificate will not be issued for the child and any future financial assistance will be denied.

From the proposed legislation, as reported by the Chicagoist:

“[The bill provides] that if the unmarried mother cannot or refuses to name the child’s father, either a father must be conclusively established by DNA evidence or, within 30 days after birth, another family member who will financially provide for the child must be named, in court, on the birth certificate. Provides that absent DNA evidence or a family member’s name, a birth certificate will not be issued and the mother will be ineligible for financial aid from the State for support of the child.”

According to the Chicagoist, the bill reflects some questionable sentiments raised by another GOP lawmaker, State Rep. Jeanne Ives, who last year argued in favor of a similar bill killed by House Democrats:

“You need to have verifiable need. You better know who the daddy is and whether or not he can afford that child and whether or not the taxpayers should be funding that or if there’s actual child support he can provide.”

Although the bill will most likely be shot down by the Democratic majority, the motives behind it disturbs some observers.

“This is a punitive and outrageous bill that would have a hugely negative impact on those most likely in need of safety net programs and support,” said Ed Yohnka of the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union.

Why not women can have abortions without a man say even if he wants the child. She can collect child support just by telling a guy it’s his then when it’s not he don’t get a dime reimbursed. It’s about time this law got proposed.

What about the jackass that says oh it isn’t mine and he walks away and u can’t find him so u take it out on the mom and the baby this is stupid and so are u

  7. Ashley says:

That’s not fair some mothers may be in a relationship and then they break up before the baby is due.and the mom dontwant the dad on the births certificate. Because then by law that dadbhas rights.and just about everything do in life u need a births certificate.don’t let them get child support if they don’t know where the daddy is.

  8. Girlsheep says:

Isn’t it illegal to deny an American born citizen a birth certificate, most women already know who the father of their baby’s are but another ill law prevents them from putting his name on the birth certificate if you’re not married. This is not a episode of Maury’s “who’s the Daddy”. They are messing with the citizenship of American citizens.

  9. C ben says:

Maybe this will encourage the use of both control.

  10. Yoyo says:

First off this is ridiculous that a child who had no choice in being born would have to exist without a birth certificate which means no ss card. This is not gonna fly. Just so dumb.

  11. Shannon McNeal says:
