According to Chicago Police Department, a child’s body parts were found Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon near Chicago’s Garfield Park.

The search was initiated when a passerby discovered a child’s foot around 4:40 p.m. that same afternoon in the lagoon of the park. Police were then alerted and multiple police vechiles and officers arrived. During their initial search they found a badly decomposed right hand nearly 25 yards away from the lagoon. A 20-pound weight was also found near the body parts, according to Police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

“I’m just still overwhelmed to hear that, kids are supposed to come into a park and play – not be found dead. That’s terrible,” Lovia Hoyt, who lives near the park, told ABC.

The police department has since closed the park to launch a thorough investigation. “We’ve got detectives on the scene, marine units on the scene,” Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman said.

Investigators haven’t determined the child’s identity or how the child died, accoding to Guglielmi.
